0 billion each year, yet many barriers to treatment-seeking behavior must exist or firms would not experience such high rates of absenteeism, disability, health care utilization or decreased productivity from depression.

This study focused on determining if employees' and supervisors' knowledge, fears, and perceptions about depression affect treatment-seeking behavior. It was hypothesized that two major barriers to employees seeking treatment for depression were the employees lack of accurate knowledge about depression and the societal stigma associated with depression.

The methodology consisted of assessing employees' and supervisors' current levels of depression knowledge and ratings of employees' fears about revealing depression, and comparing results obtained from the employees and supervisors. Because no test instruments were available to measure employees' workplace depression knowledge or fears if they revealed depression to a supervisor, a test of depression knowledge and two surveys of fears were created. The employees survey of workplace fears consisted of 36 potential fears employees have of revealing depression to their supervisors. The supervisors survey consisted of the same 36 fears, but they were asked to rate the fears based on their perceptions of how important they felt the fears would be to the employees.

The results from the Test of Depression Knowledge indicated that approximately 90% of employees and 84% of supervisors correctly answered 50% or less of the test questions. No significant differences were found between the two groups. These results indicate that the employees and supervisors were substantially deficient in their knowledge of depression. The employees rated approximately 94% of the fears as ‘Moderate to Very Strong.’ The supervisors' results were identical with the employees—approximately 94% of the supervisor fears were rated as ‘Moderate to Very Important.’

These data and results support the need to increase knowledge of depression and reduce fears through the implementation of purposeful educational interventions at the workplace. The awareness of depression and the demystification of the consequences of revealing this serious medical disorder must be incorporated into business strategies. Without these efforts, neither treatment-seeking amelioration nor cost improvements concerning depression can occur.
