The competition among public and private schools in Thailand relative to enrollment is very strong. A student's reason to attend a particular school is influenced by many variables. School administrators should realize which variables are more important so as to plan better marketing strategies and attract more students.

520 $a Students at the first year Certificate level in vocational education in Thailand were surveyed in June 2001 regarding their reasons for choosing a particular private vocational school. There were 580 participants in the sample. Variables in this study were divided into two broad categories: student characteristic variables and variables influencing school choice.
520 $a The research questions relative to this study pertained to describing the sample with regard to the student characteristic variables and variables influencing school choice. The relationship between the student characteristic variables and variables influencing school choice was also determined.
520 $a The following variables influencing school choice were found to be important to students in private vocational schools: educational programs; parent preferences; good academic reputation; good reputation in social activities; and information from school documents and brochures. The school choice variables that were found to be not important are the following: advertising on TV; information from the school websites; low tuition; recruited by the athletic department; and advertising in the newspaper.
520 $a An overall relationship between student characteristics and selected variables influencing school choice was found. Relationships between selected school choice variables and each of the following student characteristic variables: gender; living places during study; entrance examination; educational aspiration; parent's educational level; primary financial aid; GPA: vocational school rank; and family income were also found.
