The study was conducted to determine the prevalence and content of courses on the Vietnam war in 161 U.S. colleges and universities. Additionally, the study focused upon the proponent academic disciplines of the courses. Course content and emphasis was compared to the social and political orientation, veteran status, age, and other personal factors involving the instructors. Course popularity and student motivational factors were examined as was the prevailing on-campus academic atmosphere in which the courses were conducted.

Major findings of the study include: (1) Vietnam War courses are popular with students for a variety of reasons; (2) Most courses were developed and are being taught by senior faculty members, many of whom were personally involved in some aspect of the Vietnam War; (3) While the majority of instructors were liberal in their political and social orientation, the majority of their courses do not place undue emphasis upon any particular aspect of the war.
