Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 1999.
Social information processing differences were investigated as possible explanations for the high comorbidity between language disorders and aggressive behavior in school-aged children. 184 children were classified according to receptive and expressive language ability and were presented with hypothetical social situations. Poor receptive language ability predicted difficulty with appraisal of social situations, focus on irrelevant cues, and reliance on negative schemata. Poor expressive language ability predicted less verbal responding. Children with poor receptive or expressive language ability tended to be more aggressive and less socially competent; children with low overall scores were particularly at risk. Empirical support is provided for the proposed social information processing mechanism linking language ability and social competence. The importance of thorough developmental screening for child clinicians is highlighted.
