The discriminant validity of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) in differentiating children with autism from nonautistic developmentally disabled children was studied. Ten children with autism, 10 children with mental retardation, and 10 children with developmental language disorders comprised the sample of the study. The subjects were rated, based on behavioral observation obtained from three standardized situations, by two graduate students in psychology using the CARS. A 3 * (2 * 10) mixed factorial design with disorders and raters as the between- and within-subjects independent variables were employed. It was found that the CARS successfully differentiated between the autistic and the developmental language disabled subjects. However, the present study failed to replicate earlier research findings which testified to the discriminatory ability in distinguishing children with autism from children with mental retardation. Several possible explanations for the findings were discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
