Meaning, disorder, and the political economy of night markets in Taiwan.
Yu, Shuenn-Der.
Meaning, disorder, and the political economy of night markets in Taiwan.
- 274 p.
Chair: G. William Skinner.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Davis, 1995.
This dissertation analyzes night markets--a Chinese institution with deep historical roots. Based on data collected in the Taipei metropolitan area and both urban and rural Tainan County in southern Taiwan, the author shows how night markets provide both public recreation and support for the island's small-scale domestic manufacturing sector. The analysis establishes that in Taiwan small-scale family firms dominate both the retail and manufacturing sectors, documents the links between the two, and shows how the night-market network serves to reproduce the economy of petty family enterprises.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter One examines nightly and periodic night markets in terms of vendor organizations, division of labor, market activities, and consumer profiles. Chapter Two analyzes night marketing systems in Taipei metropolitan area and Tainan County. Chapter Three addresses the reasons why an increasing number of Taiwanese are choosing to enter this particular profession, and related implications for Taiwan's political, economic, and family relationships. Chapter Four discusses the role of night market vending in Taiwan's overall economic structure, as well as how vending defies claims made by numerous informal sector theorists; it is argued that Taiwan's night markets are closely related with the mostly informal, small-scale, family-based manufacturers, rather than with the more formal economic institutions. Chapter Five explores the meaning of night market consumption and the status of night markets in contemporary Taiwanese society.
