This study investigated the worldviews of 103 Singaporean international and 108 U.S. college students, their expectations of counseling, the association between worldviews and expectations of counseling, and the students' perceptions of counselor effectiveness given two different counseling styles--directive and nondirective. The students first completed the Scale to Assess Worldviews (SAWV; Ibrahim & Kahn, 1984; 1994), and the Expectations About Counseling-Brief Form (EAC-B; Tinsley, 1982). They then viewed a videotape of a simulated counseling session presenting either a directive or non-directive counseling style, and rated the counselor on the Counselor Effectiveness Rating Scale (CERS; Atkinson & Wampold, 1982).Subjects--Topical Terms:

Singaporean and U.S. students' ranked collaterality, a future time orientation, a preference for 'doing', and the belief that human nature is a combination of good and bad above other value-orientations. Their primary worldview was mainly Optimistic. Significant country and gender differences were found--Singaporean students gave higher endorsements to lineality and the belief that human nature was basically evil, and U.S. students gave higher endorsements for 'being-in-becoming' or the development of the inner self. Men, more than women endorsed a Traditional worldview and gave higher endorsements for (a) the belief that human nature was evil, (b) lineality, and (c) individualism.

U.S. students had higher expectations of personal commitment to counseling and believed more in its efficacy. Singaporeans expected the counselor to be more directive, empathic, and self-disclosing than U.S. students. Women, more than men, expected to be more motivated toward the counseling process. Men expected more counselor directiveness, empathy and self-disclosure.

Worldviews were found to be significantly associated with expectations. A high association was found between: (a) Optimistic worldview and Personal Commitment, and Facilitative Conditions; (b) Traditional worldview and Counselor Expertise and Nurturance. There was a stronger worldviews-expectations association for the U.S. group.

Singaporean students rated the nondirective counselor higher on counselor expertise, while U.S. students did likewise for the directive counselor. This shows that expectations of counseling may not be congruent with perceptions of counselor effectiveness or with preferences for a particular counseling style.
