The '85 Movement, which flourished from 1985 to 1989, was the first nation-wide avant-garde movement since the founding of the People's Republic of China. It laid the foundation for Chinese art of the 1980s and 90's, and might continue to be influential. The 85 Movement was very much a product of its period and reflected the intellectual engagements of the 1980s when China had just opened its door to the West.

520 $a Most of the artists of the '85 movement were of the generation born just before or during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76) and experienced the rapid political and economic change in contemporary Chinese society. They were extremely devoted to the search for a modern-type of Chinese culture, and to involving themselves in social reform by fighting for freedom of self-expression. In doing so, they adopted various contemporary visual forms and employed different artistic approaches. Rather than aiming to established conventional art schools or styles, in their art practice they engaged in a search for a contemporary Chinese intellectual ideology which, for most, combines concepts, such as individualism, humanism and nationalism. All the different such “isms” no matter how ambiguous and controversial, were fixed in the particular Chinese political and cultural context of 1980's.
520 $a A pivotal event in modern cultural history, the '85 Movement was a group movement which overwhelmingly involved some 100 self-organized avant-garde groups during the second half of 1980. The movement produced the numerous attention-getting avant-garde exhibitions of various scales in different locations across the nation, various provocative Dada-Chan-type conceptual art projects, and some extremely aggressive performances which frequently took place in the public sphere. This thesis tempts to sketch an overview of the '85 Movement, its development and the activities of the groups and artists by using a lot of original, first-hand materials and documents.
