This thesis study examines the role of Western contacts and modernist influences in Chinese art over the half century since the end of World War II. The focus of the paper is on the search for an indigenous Chinese style in the fine arts of the modern era, as Western influences and techniques have introduced new and alien images and styles into the traditional Chinese arts.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The main thesis of this study is that while the Western modernist schools have been important sources of technique and style in contemporary Chinese art, the social and political conditions of today's China have favored the styles, subjects and formats of post-modernism, which has resulted in combined themes from art history, popular culture and current political affairs. The author concludes that contemporary Chinese artists will continue to expand and develop their graphic and plastic work in the full range of past and present styles.
