Americans have a long history of using economic means to effect social and political change. From the time of the Boston Tea Party and before, citizens used their “purse power” in various ways. In the last three decades of the 20<super>th</super> century and continuing into the 21<super>st</super> century, many Americans turned to socially responsible investing and, in particular, socially responsible mutual funds as an investment vehicle to prod corporations and nations to reconsider their policies and their politics.

The SRI funds add qualitative overlays, or screens, to the quantitative criteria typically used to evaluate mutual funds as potential investments. The original screens, Vietnam and apartheid, have multiplied over time to include the so-called “sin screens” (tobacco, alcohol and gaming), the environment, workplace diversity issues, indigenous peoples' rights and countless others. Their early detractors predicted they would not survive once the Vietnam War ended and apartheid was abolished in South Africa, but SRI has grown and flourished since 1970. As of year-end 2001, some 230 SRI mutual funds held

“Power in the Purse” traces the evolution of the socially responsible investment movement and the different types of social investing—activist, avoidance and alternative—through a detailed examination of seven SRI mutual funds. It demonstrates that while SRI funds do have in common their use of screens, the ways in which they employ them vary widely. Some contact corporations privately, while others turn to shareholder resolutions and publicity in the media. The funds examined range from small to large, from the original SRI mutual fund to some of the most recent.
