Four theories of memory were modeled using confirmatory factor analysis. Squire's (1994), Johnson and Hirst's (1993) and Schacter and Tulving's (1994) theories were chosen as each represents a fairly detailed, and modelable, account of memory components. A fourth theory, the unitary theory of memory, which posits a single memory system, was modeled as a mathematical base for comparison. Data from nine tests designed to tap three types of memory (free recall, implicit category cued recall, implicit word fragment completion) were collected from undergraduate students to evaluate the models.

Four measures were used to evaluate each model. First, each model was evaluated as to how well the data fit the model. Second, critical parameters within each model were examined to see if they significantly improved the fit. Third, the model's ability to account for the variance within each test of memory was considered. Fourth, weaknesses within a model were identified through modification indices.

As expected, the unitary model provided a poor fit for the data, and the three remaining models performed relatively well, but there were critical differences. Specifically, although the model based on one interpretation of Squire's theory provided a moderately good fit to the data, it had difficulty accounting for the data from the conceptual implicit memory task. The Johnson and Hirst model also produced a relatively good fit but had difficulties in two areas. Tests of free recall did not add significantly to the models' fit, and the model failed to account for a substantial amount of variance associated with implicit category cued recall.

Unlike the other models, all critical parameters in the Schacter and Tulving model significantly added to the model's fit. Moreover, no additional theoretically relevant parameters could be added that would significantly improve the fit of the model. In sum, of the models tested, the model based on Schacter and Tulving's theory of memory best captures the results of the memory tasks used in this study.
