In December of 1968 a turning point in human consciousness occurred when the Apollo 8 astronauts orbited the Moon and brought back the first color photographic images of the "whole Earth" taken by a man using a hand-held camera. Since the days of Apollo, these photographs have been transformed from icons to cliches. Today photographs and artistic representations of the planet, as seen from space, have so permeated U.S. culture that they adorn an almost unbelievable array of consumer products, advertisements, and publications.

520 $a As a feminist-ecologist I am interested in these images and what they reveal about contemporary U.S. culture. In a qualitative study I have collected over three hundred examples of Earth imagery from contemporary sources: advertisements, found primarily on television and in newspapers and magazines; merchandise found in stores and mail-order catalogs; and illustrations used in U.S. publications, including newspapers, magazines, and books.
520 $a Employing a cultural analysis informed by concepts from feminism, ecology, and semiotics, I examine this data with three questions in mind: (1) What characteristics are assigned to the planet? (2) Who touches the planet and how? (3) What are the subsequent cultural and ecological messages?
520 $a I lay the groundwork for the study of visual Earth images by discussing metaphor and examining several culturally dominant verbal metaphors for the Earth, including "virgin land," "Spaceship Earth," "Gaia," and "Mother Earth." I then study the collected visual images. From this analysis a "Touch Continuum" emerges which describes who touches the Earth and how. Touch types on this continuum range from protective, contemplative, manipulative, and mutilative touch to no-touch. Each touch type is associated with specific groups of people.
520 $a I expand upon Max Black (1962, 1979) and I. A. Richards' (1936) "interaction theory of metaphor" and George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's "metaphorical concept" (1980) to propose an interaction theory of metaphors and visual images. I use a feminist-ecological critique and a semiotic deconstruction of the images studied to delineate three ecological and cultural myths: the myths of political neutrality, ecological independence, and escape. I examine how these myths serve consumer capitalist patriarchy and perpetuate themes of frontierism and American exceptionalism.
