The purpose of this study was to evaluate a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program for older sedentary patients (78.5 $\pm$ 5.0 years) with chronic heart disease. Patients were those with chronic cardiovascular disease defined as: chronic stable angina, congestive heart failure (NYHA Class I-III), stable essential hypertension, and recent myocardial infarction. Twenty-five women and five men were randomly assigned stepwise into three groups. The high intensity training (HI) group (n = 10) received a home exercise program of progressive walking; low intensity training (LOW) group (n = 10) received a home program of light calisthenic exercises; and the CONTROL group (n = 10) received only routine care, no exercise program was prescribed. Both training groups participated in supervised exercise sessions three times weekly for 16 weeks. Outcomes included self-efficacy, quality of life and functional capacity (VO$\sb{\rm 2max})$ measured by a step test in the home and a symptom-limited treadmill test in the laboratory before and after completion of the training period. After 16 weeks, we observed that these outcome measures showed significant improvement following study intervention in both training groups as compared to the CONTROL group (n = 8). Furthermore, the HI group (n = 8) had greater improvements in quality of life and VO$\sb{\rm 2max}$ measures than the LOW group (n = 5). The results of this study suggest that home-based cardiac rehabilitation programs for older cardiac patients can make significant improvements in functional capacity, self-efficacy and quality of life measures.
