The emotional Stroop is one of the most widely used methodologies for investigating attentional bias related to emotional disorder. The emotional Stroop was employed in this research to investigate the relationship between arousal, attention, and cognition among college student gamblers. High frequency (HF) and low frequency (LF) gamblers were compared on affective ratings and reaction time (RT) for color naming with gambling, neutral, and drug stimuli. The predictions were as follows: (1) HF gamblers would rate gambling stimuli as more positively arousing than drug and neutral stimuli and than LF gamblers. (2) HF gamblers would demonstrate greater RT for color naming with gambling stimuli than with drug or neutral stimuli and than LF gamblers. HF gamblers rated gambling stimuli as more positively arousing than drug and neutral stimuli and than LF gamblers. There were no RT differences across group or condition when groups were matched by gender. The affective rating results support the arousal theory of gambling behavior. The RT results were not supportive of attentional bias toward pathology relevant stimuli among the HF gambling group.
