This study was designed to measure the effects of self-concept programming for mentally ill clients treated in a continuing day treatment setting. The areas under study included the quality of life of individuals with chronic mental illness as well as the direct effect of the programming on self-concept in these individuals. The main hypothesis of this study was: Occupational therapy group treatment directed at improving self-concept will positively affect quality of life and improve self-concept in individuals who have a serious and persistent mental illness. Fifteen mentally ill clients at a continuing day treatment center volunteered to participate in this study. The findings of this research confirm that self-concept programming does improve the clarity of an individual's self-concept and may have some effect on the perception of quality of life.
