Thesis (M.A.)--MCP Hahnemann University, 2001.
Given the prevalence of depression and its cost to the impacted individuals, their families, and society, the importance of assessing and treating depression is evident. When evaluating the effectiveness of dance/movement therapy as a treatment for depression, the specific measurement tool used can significantly affect the results. The theoretical construct of the measure, method of administration, psychometric properties, and population under review all impact the outcome. The purpose of this study is to identify published measures of depression, as well as published and unpublished movement assessments, and to categorize these measures. The ultimate aim is to provide recommendations for choosing the “best fit” among the myriad of measures of depression so that reliable and valid outcome research on the efficacy of dance/movement therapy for the treatment of adults with depression may be conducted.

The measure selected should provide the researcher or clinician with the information that is most useful in evaluating the efficacy of the treatment. A review of the literature highlighted the benefits of a multiple assessment strategy. Three measures, The Inventory for Depressive Symptomatology, clinician and self-report versions, and the Functional Assessment of Movement, are recommended, creating an assessment battery that includes an observer rating, a self-report measure, and a movement assessment.
