Post-menopausal women commonly experience complex life transitions involving biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors which may result in stress and potential health consequences (Reeder, Martin, & Konik-Griffin, 1997). Postmenopausal women comprise 13.54% of the total Thai female population, and are a population with needs that are poorly understood (Ministry of Public Health, 1997). There is some research concerning the physical symptomology associated with the post-menopausal period among Thai women, but scant data on psychological stress among this cohort (Punyahotra et al., 1997).

Participation in exercise is an important technique for both stress reduction and health promotion. In assessing the psychological benefits of exercise, investigators have commonly turned to the concepts of health locus of control and self-esteem (Biddle, 1995; Gregg, Kriska, Venkat-Narayan, & Knowler, 1996). However, no clear consensus has been reached, suggesting the need for exploration of the relationship between exercise and psychological benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exercise on stress, self-esteem, and health locus of control in Thai postmenopausal women.

Data were collected on 102 Thai post-menopausal women. Research instruments utilized included the: (a) Personal Information Form, (b) Modified General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg, 1972; Pirasorn, 1998), (c) Culturally Modified Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965; Rojanadhamkul, 1992), (d) Modified Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (Wallston, Wallston, & DeVellis, 1978; Phiwton, 1984).

Three hypotheses (one each on stress, self-esteem, and internal health locus of control) were tested by the dependent t-test to compare subjects' response before and after participating in the exercise program. Correlation, analysis of variance, and regression analysis were used to describe the influence of demographic data. There were statistically significant relationships between of an exercise program and (a) reduction of stress, (b) increased self-esteem, and (c) increased internal health locus of control. The most dramatic change was in reduction of stress.
