Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 2002.
In utilizing the notion of hope as defined by Snyder (1991), it has been established that both adults and children possess a measurable degree of dispositional hope. The notion of hope as a situational construct has been examined and validated in adults. The purpose of this study was to identify and validate a measure of situational hope in children. This was addressed via the development and validation of the Children's Domain-Specific Hope Scale (CDSHS).

The participants were 231 boys and girls drawn from the sixth and eighth grades in a mid-sized mid-western community. The responses from the children identifying different levels of dispositional hope were factor analyzed to determine the presence of the hypothesized six clear and unique domains or areas of hope in children's lives. The reliability of the instrument was established via confirmation of the predicted factor structure and significant alpha coefficients demonstrating the instruments reliability. Concurrent validity was established via correlational studies between the CDSHS and previously existing measures of similar constructs. The findings supporting the structural and theoretical integrity of the CDSHS are seen as a validation for the CDSHS to be used as a tool in working with children. This may be accomplished by identifying areas of strong hope and learning ways of transferring those strategies to other areas of life characterized by lower levels of hope. These possibilities and the current limitations are discussed within the findings.
