This study consisted of five studies that aimed to establish the reliability and validity of the Heterosexism Scale. Study 1 involved generating an item pool and establishing content validity for the scale. In Study 2, the reliability of the Heterosexism Scale was assessed. In Study 3, exploratory factor analyses were conducted. In Study 4, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to test the factor structures generated in Study 3. Study 5 entailed examination of the construct validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the Heterosexism Scale. The results of these five studies indicated that the Heterosexism Scale was both reliable and valid. The final versions of the Heterosexism Scale included two factors that reflect superiority of heterosexuality and tolerance/acceptance of non-heterosexual relationships. The reliability and validity of the scale should be further examined using different samples. Limitations of the five studies and implications for research and practice in counseling psychology are discussed.
