Sexual minority identity formation and internalized homophobia in lesbians: A validation study of a new instrument and related variables. - 122 p.

The purpose of this investigation is two-fold. First, the study attempts to provide psychometric data for a new and promising instrument measuring sexual identity formation in lesbians. Second, the project explores the relationship between sexual identity formation and internalized homophobia. A total of 154 volunteer participants were recruited, meeting the following criteria: (1) adult, being at minimum, 18 years of age, and (2) self-identified as lesbian. Specifically, results from the exploratory factor analysis suggest that a two-factor solution using an oblimin rotation yields the most interpretable solution. This factor structure accounts for 38% of the variance and was preferred over the other solutions because it was the most conceptually sound and it produced the most robust factor structure. The factor structure appears to indicate a distinction between the early awareness phase and the integration/synthesis phase of sexual identity formation. Also, the results indicate that the measure was not able to distinguish intermediate phases. Hence, these findings suggest that the measure of sexual identity formation does not accurately depict the proposed model of sexual identity formation. The findings indicate a significant negative relationship between each branch of sexual identity development and internalized homophobia. Also, the results indicate a significant positive relationship between phase of individual sexual identity development and phase of group membership identity development. Level of internalized homophobia and age at which one came “out” to self were significant predictors of individual sexual identity phase. Age at which one first came “out” to self, level of internalized homophobia, and how “out” one is to friends were significant predictors of group membership identity phase. Age at which one came “out” to self, and how “out” one is to co-workers were significant predictors of phase of sexual identity (using phases from the new factor structure). Lastly, results suggest that internalized homophobia needs to be assessed and addressed as a therapeutic issue in promoting a healthy gay, lesbian, or bisexual identity.
