Thesis (M.S.N.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 2002.
Due to globalization, the healthcare industry is treating increasingly diverse cultural populations. An element of an individual's culture that affects their approach to wellness is their religious views related to health issues. The purpose of study was to identify the religious perspectives on health and health practices of the six world religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism). No representative for Confucianism was found. Persons in leadership in each of the major world religions provided written responses to three research questions and participated in a follow-up interview. The findings from the five religions assessed indicated similarities that would allow Christians, Islamics, and Jews to be categorized as People of a Book; and Hindu and Buddhists as People of a Moral Way. Twelve themes emerged that were further synthesized into the four concepts of distinctiveness, causality, beliefs influence practice, and healthcare responsiveness. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
