This dissertation examines the role of music and dance in the development of regional identity in northern Thailand. The primary focus is on the musical activities of the mainstream population, the khon muang. The first chapter introduces the subject, reviews prior literature, explains research methodologies, and outlines the contents of the dissertation. The second chapter provides a brief history of the northern region of Thailand from roughly the seventh century A.D. to its annexation to Siam at the end of the nineteenth century.

The third chapter deals with the historical development of images of Lanna-thai ethnicity beginning in the early twentieth century with Princess Dararatsmi of Chiang Mai. The history of the khantoke dinner cultural show is given as is a synopsis of the major musical activities found at these popular events. The fourth chapter introduces in descriptive detail many khon muang musical instruments and their performance practice. The following chapter places those instruments in the context of ensemble performance and describes several common cultural events that include such ensembles and other musical activities.

The final chapter examines the issue of image management and its influence on interpretations of ethnicity. The interrelated components of ethnic identity, ethnic image, and ethnicity are discussed using a semiological model and are followed by an analysis of three khon muang musical activities, the khantoke dinner cultural show, the poi luang (temple fair), and performance of the phin pia. These case studies demonstrate how invented traditions used to promote Lanna-thai ethnicity are affecting the self-perception of the khon muang population. The document concludes with several appendices that include maps of the region, tunings and fingerings for the major instruments, and several melodic and rhythmic notations of common khon muang melodies and drum patterns, as well as a glossary and reference list.
