Corita Kent (1918–1986) was an internationally celebrated silkscreen artist and designer. For over three decades, “Sister Corita” was also a nun and a charismatic art professor at Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood, California. At the age of 50, Corita—as she came to be known—resigned from her teaching post and her religious community, relocated to Boston, and continued to produce art until her death. Despite her numerous professional accomplishments, however, this twentieth-century woman artist has been relatively overlooked by academia. “Life stories of artist Corita Kent (1918–1986): Her spirit, her art, the woman within” retraces the social and cultural influences that shaped her as a nun, an artist, and a woman, especially during the 1960s. The biographical data are presented chronologically in three parallel stories, each informed by primary and secondary historical documents, and by current interviews with her family, and her former friends, colleagues, and students. This interpretive biography gives testimony to ways in which Corita successfully juxtaposed the commonplace with the prophetic in both her art and in her life.
