The ability to identify and interpret works of art in museums is facilitated by the use of labels which are used not only by experts, such as art historians and collectors, but also by novices who have little or no experience with art. This dissertation examines the experiences of adult visitor-participants and describes the process by which judgments about labels are made. The study is focused on three questions: (1) Why do visitors read labels? (2) Why do visitors return to look at objects? (3) What are the characteristics of labels that impede visitors from using texts and from understanding objects?

520 $a Using a quasi-experimental framework and observation, questionnaire, and interview methods, the study analyzed the interactions of visitor-participants with exhibits for the purpose of understanding their goals and expectations for labels. It was found that participants' goals for using labels at times fit in with and at times conflicted with the label writer's texts. In instances of conflicting goals and intentions for labels, participants' interactions were impeded by label texts. The study also highlighted the practice of reading labels and returning to look at objects in which participants' expectations and needs interfaced with label writers' own judgments, interests, and ideas. Implications and recommendations for future practice include the need for label writers to develop guidelines and requirements for labels based on their own goals for visitors' learning and visitors' own goals for interpretation and meaning in viewing objects.
