Clear Mountain is a funky northern New Jersey suburb that is struggling with white flight from its public schools. It was chosen as the site for this study both because of its unique position as one of the few integrated suburbs in an otherwise extremely segregated state, and for its character. Clear Mountain was voted the most livable suburb for inter-racial families by “ Interrace” Magazine in 1998, and also voted as one of the top ten “coolest” places to live if you're a teen by <underline>Seventeen </underline>, Magazine, in 1999. Clear Mountain, a virtual ghetto for artistic types—may well be the only place in northern New Jersey where doctors, lawyers, artists, teachers, filmmakers and bankers all hob-nob together at the local block party.

The quantitative data in this study came from the Clear Mountain Public schools, who publish the district enrollment report and a district achievement report each year. This report contains the results of standardized test scores given the previous year, and SAT scores. I also obtained qualitative data in the form of transcripts from focus groups conducted by the Board of Education.

I conducted interviews with 40 families. The subjects were Clear Mountain residents having children in eighth grade or in high school. Most of the subjects of these interviews were white, middle-class, two-parent families. Twenty families had exited for private schools, and twenty families remained advocates of the public schools. Subjects were asked about their view of the components of a good education; the differences between public and private schools; and their personal perception of Clear Mountain High School.

After examining the data from the focus groups transcripts, the school system, and the 40 interviews, I found that white flight from Clear Mountain High School occurred for the following reasons: the unique event of detracking the English curriculum in 1994, the perception of the lack of discipline at Clear Mountain High School, and implicit racism.
