This study investigated the prevalent attitudes of Korean kindergarten teachers toward death and death education for young children in their educational setting, in order (1) to discover how they think and feel about death and death education and what they do with children in death related situations in their classroom, and (2) to examine how traditional Korean culture has influenced their attitudes and practices. Survey and interview methods were utilized to answer these questions. The survey revealed that the majority of the Korean kindergarten teachers displayed a neutral, slightly leaning toward unfavorable attitude toward death and ambivalent attitudes toward the inclusion of the death theme in the early childhood education curriculum. The interviews revealed that the majority of the interviewed teachers showed a strong continuity of traditional present-oriented attitudes toward life and death, which were deeply embedded in the diverse traditional religious views of death-related phenomena. They showed a strong continuity with the Taoist tradition in their attitudes toward death education for young children, despite the overall weak reflections of traditional religions in their attitudes toward death education. They also showed a continuity of diverse religious traditions, namely, Confucianist, Taoist, Buddhist, and Shamanist, in their reported practices, despite the lack of substantial descriptions regarding their practice in death incidents in their classrooms. At the same time, they revealed a strong preference for the Taoist approach, favoring the natural exposure of children to death and death related subjects. Buddhist and non-religious teachers showed a similar pattern of reflection of traditional culture in their attitudes and practices, while Christian teachers did not.

These findings suggest that the inclusion of death education in the current curriculum should be undertaken with care and should be based on open communication with the teachers and on thorough examinations of the societal and cultural contexts in which the teachers reside. Whether Korean kindergarten teachers become advocates of the inclusion of death education or not greatly depends upon how successful the efforts toward inclusion are. At the end, this study recommends several technical considerations and topics for further study, based on a critique of the present work.
