Performance changes which result from practice in consistent mapping visual search tasks have often been attributed to changes in the capacity of the information processing system. In this paper a transfer of training paradigm is used to examine the extent to which these performance changes result from changes in the knowledge state of the individual as opposed to changes in processing capacity. Subjects were transferred between tasks where they simply responded as to whether a target was present in the visual display or not to tasks where finer discriminations were required. These finer discriminations involved either identifying subset membership of the targets on positive trials or identifying the presence or absence of a particular distractor on negative trials. The results indicated three characteristics of the knowledge state which contribute to performance changes. First, there is evidence for "chunking" of a consistent target set into a single equivalence class. Second, there is evidence for changes in the sensitivity or detection threshold for targets and distractors. Sensitivity increases for targets and decreases for distractors. Finally, there is evidence for chagnes in the associativity between stimuli. Associativity increases between items within the target set and within the distractor set. Associativity decreases between members of the disjoint target and distractor sets. Thus, targets become more closely associated with other targets and less closely associated with distractor items.Subjects--Topical Terms:
