Watershed-based ecological land surface monitoring is important to both scientific investigation and environmental decision-making. This study occurs as one of the components of a larger project undertaken in Indonesia termed the Collaborative Environment Project in Indonesia (CEPI). The project has focused on capacity building for effective environmental management in four Environmental Study Centres (ESC's) in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study undertaken in this thesis focuses on the Tondano watershed, which represents one of these four areas.

The first is a technical remote sensing objective that aims to improve methods for the extraction of thematic land surface distribution and change information, a key component of many decision-making and research efforts. The second is an area-specific ecological objective that aims to determine the nature of land surface change patterns and change processes as they have occurred within the Tondano study area during the ten-year time period spanning 1990 to 1999.
