520 $a This recording project explores the solo piano repertoire of leading Taiwanese composers and uncovers how Western influences have impacted Taiwanese piano music.
520 $a It is impossible to cover all Taiwanese composers in this project. I selected the composers and their solo piano music based on one or more of the following criteria: (1) they were considered leading composers of their time, (2) their piano works are important among their composition genres, (3) the composers themselves were fine pianists, or (4) I feel an attachment to their music which reflects my memories of Taiwan.
520 $a The written part of the dissertation discusses Taiwanese piano music in three distinctive time periods: (1) <italic>Period of Japanese Occupation </italic> which includes works from Chiang Wen Yeh, Chen Su-ti, and Kuo Chih-yuan, (2) <italic>Period of Awakening and Finding Roots</italic> which includes works from Hsu Tsang-Houei, Ma Shui-Long and Tyzen Hsiao and, (3) the <italic> New Generation</italic> which includes works of Shiung Che-Min and Kwang-I Ying. For each time period, the historical background, the composers, and their compositional techniques will be introduced.
520 $a The appendices provide the composers' work lists, a Chinese translation of the selected music, and a map of the location of Taiwan. A bibliography is also included. The recording part of the dissertation consists of two compact discs. The music is arranged in chronological order based upon the composers' birth dates.
520 $a The purpose of this recording dissertation project is to introduce Taiwanese solo piano music in the hopes that people will get to know and appreciate such music. Through the process of creating and performing music, the music will be popularized. I hope that this project inspires people to discover and perform Taiwanese piano music and encourages Taiwanese composers to create more great music in the future.*
