Procedures. Before the research was undertaken, a pilot study was carried out at the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In the summer of 2000, a group of Chinese students completed both the English and Chinese versions of the instrument, the Theological School Inventory. The reliability for the Chinese version established was r = 0.91 exceeding the 0.70 minimum. In the fall of 2000, seventy first year Taiwanese theological students participated in the project. The ANOVA procedure was utilized to determine if there was a significant difference in scores across the three groups of theological students. The hypothesis was tested at p < 0.05.

Findings and conclusion. The statistical analysis revealed that only one of the twenty scales of the Theological School Inventory was significantly different across the three groups. A Post Hoc test showed that the difference was between bachelor and masters level students. The p-value was 0.011. A series of t-tests and ANOVA were also performed to investigate if any other significant differences existed. On the Taiwanese sample, a significant difference was found with relation to gender. Six scales were found to be significantly different. Education, denomination, and age were not factors in terms of the motivation for ministry. When comparing the Taiwan and American data, the t-tests revealed that eleven out of the twenty scales were significantly different. Conception of motivation for ministry was different between the two cultures.
