At this time, an investigation into the continued survival of the arts of <italic>shibori</italic> (shaped resist dyeing) and <italic>rozome</italic> (wax resist dyeing) in the modern textile industry is important. Although widespread use of them is now faltering, there exists an influential sector of the industry which appreciates these art forms. What has enabled the development of this niche for certain textile arts?

One significant aspect is the development of the ‘artistic’ process within Japanese culture. An understanding of the concepts of art and craft in Japan will facilitate an analysis of trends in <italic>rozome</italic> and <italic>shibori</italic> production today, as well as in the future.
