This is a study of the biblical background of suffering and its relationship to church growth in Korea. Christianity was introduced into Korea about 110 years ago. During the last 110 years of Korean history, Koreans had to suffer greatly under the Korean Government, Japanese rule, and the Communists. This study takes into consideration how Korean Church growth has been influenced by suffering from the 1800s to 1960.

Throughout Korean Church history, suffering brought both positive and negative effects. In many cases, suffering helped Korean non-believers to be more receptive to Christianity. Suffering also cleansed and purified the Korean Church. In some cases, suffering made the Church weak or decline. Severe suffering from the Communists also totally destroyed churches in North Korea. With the persecutions, struggles, and hardships, the Holy Spirit helped the Church to spread the gospel. While God does not send suffering on His people, He often works out His purpose through suffering.
