This is an historical study of the treatment of the Pacific War in Japanese high school history textbooks from 1945 to 1995. The research problem addressed is the extent to which the treatment in textbooks of key Pacific War themes was influenced by educational policies of the Japanese government. The research methodology combines an historical analysis of factors affecting textbook content with a qualitative content analysis of six Pacific War themes in Japan high school history textbooks from the late 1940's to the mid 1990's. The six Pacific war themes are: (a) images of the War; (b) the role of the Emperor; (c) the colonization of Korea; (d) the invasion of Nanking; (e) domestic dissent; and (f) the atomic bombings. The results of the study suggest that with the exception of occupation era textbooks and textbooks written by Ienaga Saburo, the treatment of the themes in textbooks manifested more continuity than change, more uniformity than divergence. The study concludes that the key government mechanisms promoting textbook uniformity were the bureaucratization of the textbook screening process, the establishment of national curriculum guidelines, and the institution of a national university entrance examination with a Japanese history component.
