Major Professor: Winston W. Lo.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2000.
This dissertation is an attempt to capture the full contours of the state Shinto religion, which took an increasingly visible shape in the 7<super> th</super>-century Japanese court, through the application of an East Asian perspective focused on Sino-Korean civilization and its historical and social dimensions. As such, this study constitutes a much-needed departure from the traditionalist as well as modernist studies that have long dominated the Shinto scholarship with self-serving, self-authenticating views and opinions.

This study argues that the development of the ancient kami-worshipping tradition is a reinvention and regeneration of Sino-Korean civilization in a new-world situation where the ancestors of Japanese migrated from the peninsula and reinvented themselves at the expense of the life and culture of Native Japanese. This thesis starts with the neolithic life and culture of the indigenous people, differentiating their spirituality from the religion of the rice-growing, sword-brandishing, horse-riding, and finally law-brandishing Sino-Korean civilization. In an attempt to make history more relevant to the present, this work also argues that the ancient Shinto religion is a product of modernization, which was reinvented in modern times and served again as a colonist religion, this time for conquering other Asian nations.
