The questionnaire respondents for this study included 172 elementary and secondary school principals and college/university presidents in Xi'an, China. The interview participants were 15 experts in the field of educational management in Xi'an. The respondents were given questions concerning school leadership responsibilities, traits, styles, behaviors, and skills to answer. The item formats for the questionnaire were selected-response items and open-ended items. For the interview, semi-structured questions were used to elicit the answers from the participants regarding the above issues. The data of the questionnaire was analyzed on the SPSS computer program and a narrative analysis was used for the interview information. From the results of both questionnaire and interview, a model of Chinese educational leadership in the era of Deng Xiaoping was identified and developed. The principal characteristics of this model is its dualism in which Chinese school leaders hope to move toward a more democratic leadership while maintaining substantial aspect of an authoritarian leadership.
