In this thesis I explore attributes of the creative arts that make them potentially effective as part of transformational learning processes such as those that take place in educational, therapeutic and community development contexts, among others. I give both a theoretical and practical framework for understanding how change takes place and the nature of a transformational learning process, and then develop a methodology for creating learning processes that incorporate the creative arts within a change-oriented approach. Each stage in the learning cycle is discussed and examples are given of creative art practices, such as movement, visual art, and drama practices, which can be used at the different stages. This thesis provides a practical approach to using the creative arts for personal and social change that is grounded in a strong theoretical foundation.
