This action research advances the efforts of multicultural education in inner-city schools by providing educators some practical information on the process of how young adolescents learn to understand another culture through the art of the specific culture and how certain kinds of art activities and lessons function as a vehicle to understanding another culture. The subjects were twenty-four Hispanic students in sixth grade through eighth grade all of whom are residents of Koreatown. The subjects were engaged in various art activities of the target culture, namely the Korean American culture, provided by the Korean Americans including a renowned artist, Dr. Young Ae Hahn. The researcher's focus has been on the process (of the subjects' acquisition of understanding of a target culture) in which four correlated aspects emerged throughout the activities reassuring the researcher of the subjects' acquisition of understanding of the target culture. First, the subjects' <bolditalic> awareness</bolditalic> of the Korean American culture was defined in the context of their residing area. Second, the subjects' <bolditalic>acquisition</bolditalic> of the knowledge of the Korean American culture shifted from general to specific. Third, the subjects' acceptance of the differences between their own culture and the Korean American culture propelled their interest to learn more about the target culture. Fourth, the subjects' <bolditalic>approach </bolditalic> to Korean Americans became voluntary and more frequent as the result of their involvement in this program.
