- 223 p.
Director: Carole Henry.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Georgia, 2001.
This dissertation is a study of artists who participated in the Vietnam war. Its central focus is the connection between war experience and art produced about that experience. Vietnam veteran art ranges from straightforward documentary work to imagery that is introspective and emotional. Because this research is both descriptive and exploratory, it combines aspects of ethnography, case study, and phenomenology. In the broadest sense, it represents the personal side of a controversial and devisive event in U.S. history, and as such, it may serve to further understanding and healing.

A lot of respondents did not address Vietnam through art until many years after returning from the war. The presence of very personal, expressive, and symbolic images makes one easily assume that all Vietnam veteran art was created for therapeutic reasons. Although some did use art for emotional catharsis, most did not.

From the standpoints of artistic history, military service, and the creative process, Vietnam veteran artists are a diverse subject population. Each describes Vietnam as a major event in their lives, but in different ways. They recall traumatic episodes, as well as events reflecting aesthetic awareness, pathos and even humor.

There are also many different ways of explaining the connection between Vietnam and their art. Some individuals made limited use of Vietnam as a subject, while others see it as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. For all the differences among them, the significant unifying aspect is that, to whatever degree, all used art to record, react, or reflect on what they experienced in the Vietnam War.
