Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, 2001.
This study identifies the visual experiences that are significant to four early adolescent urban learners and examines the meanings that these visual experiences hold for the learners. It focuses on the need for middle school art teachers to be knowledgeable about the visual experiences that are important to early adolescent urban learners and to consider student experience as valid content upon which to build curriculum. The participants took photographs of visual experiences that were important to them using single use 35mm cameras. Data were collected during the spring semester of 1998 through individual interviews, focus group interviews/dialogues, and the photographs taken by the participants. They were then coded and analyzed for meaning and understanding. The significant visual experiences of early adolescent urban learners can provide a basis for understanding their point of view and the meanings inside of their ideas and expand the scope of knowledge in art education regarding the early adolescent learner.
