The impact of music upon oral language proficiency in a group of second-language kindergartners. - 45 p.

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if the use of music would increase English language frequency in a group of second language kindergartners. The subjects selected for this investigation consisted of two girls and two boys between the ages of four and five. All were recent arrivals from Mexico who had not been exposed to English. The subjects were observed for a total of four weeks. During the first two weeks, subjects were observed after exposure to an English Language Development (ELD) lesson which did not make use of music. Each time the subjects spoke English, it was recorded. After two weeks, music was played to instruct the ELD lesson and the students were similarly observed to discover how frequently they used English to communicate with others. A dramatic increase in English language frequency resulted when subjects were exposed to music.
