Scope and method of study. During the winter of 1991 a survey of patients and staff of Oklahoma Memorial Hospital was conducted. The purpose of the study was to explore preferences for wall colors in the patient room. Six rooms were each painted a different color using the three primary colors and the three secondary colors. Three values of each color were used in each room: a shade on one wall, a tone on two walls, and a tint on the ceiling. A seventh room was left in the ivory currently used in hospital patient rooms. A semantic bi-polar scale of 20 adjective pairs was also used to evaluate the meaning of the environment.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions. The Chi square statistic found four of five color preferences significantly related to room colors. The summed scores of the five preferences were used to form an overall color preference index score. Analysis of variance revealed color preference x room color to be highly significant (.0001). Color preferences for blue, red, and purple, and non-preferences for yellow and ivory were found. Factor Analysis was used to analyze the scale of bi-polar adjective variables. Factors loaded in five factor groups in the order of aesthetic, social, design, physical and comfort factors. Analysis of variance revealed that aesthetic and social factors were significantly related to room colors and that color preferences were significantly related to environmental factors. Implications for color usage in hospital spaces are suggested. Interior designers and architects should place emphasis on aesthetics and social factors, when planning hospital environments.
