Chinese maternal and paternal perceptions of child temperament (i.e., emotionality, activity level, sociability, and attention focusing) as well as self-rated parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) were measured in a sample of 190 families with 4–6 year old children residing in Beijing, China. Psychometric support for child temperament and parenting style dimensions was obtained using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis techniques.

Substantive findings indicated that higher maternal education was linked to more maternal warmth and involvement. Also, child attention focusing was related to a lower use of maternal punishment and to higher scores on maternal confidence and showing respect to the child (a stylistic dimension within the authoritative style). Fathers with more education were found to be more confident in parenting, to be more respectful of their children, and to be more warm and involved in child rearing (stylistic dimensions in the authoritative style). Fathers also used punishment more often with boys versus girls. Although higher child attention focusing was linked to more paternal involvement, more child emotionality was associated with lower paternal respect/confidence, less paternal warmth and involvement, more paternal punishment and verbal directiveness, and more paternal permissiveness. Thus, child gender and temperament appeared to be a more salient factor for Chinese fathers' parenting styles than for mothers' parenting styles.
