Thesis (Ph.D.)--Mississippi State University, 1998.
The purpose of this dissertation study was to test the validity of the proposed Gay and Lesbian Affirmative Development (GLAD) model, a gay identity development counseling model. This model is an integration of Allen Ivey's Developmental Counseling Therapy (DCT) model and Vivienne Cass' Homosexual Identity Formation (HIF) Model. To test the validity of the GLAD model, 108 participants were given the Gay Identity Questionnaire (GIQ), the written version of the Standard Developmental Counseling Interview (SCDI), the Brief Symptom Inventory, and a demographic questionnaire.

Several statistically and practically significant results were found. First, participants in the upper stages of the DCT were in the upper stages of the HIF at a rate better than chance alone, indicating that as with the DCT model, gay identity development can be categorized by concrete and abstract frames of reference. Second, participants in HIF stage five were found to be in DCT levels two and four at a rate better than chance alone, suggesting that HIF stage five might represent horizontal development between HIF stages four and six. Third, participants in the upper stages of the HIF were less likely to have psychological distress than participants in the lower stages, especially on the depression and psychoticism subscales of the BSI. Fourth, participants in the upper stages of the DCT were less likely to have psychological distress on the hostility subscale of the BSI.

Based on these initial findings, it was hypothesized that gay identity development involves a process of both vertical and horizontal development consisting of the following GLAD model stages: (a) sensing, (b) perceiving, (c) identifying, (d) reconciling, and (e) learning. The first four stages represent vertical development stages. The learning stage represents Ivey's concept of dialectical deconstruction and is the horizontal development between reconciling one's gay identity with other parts of the self and learning more about what it means to be gay.
