Existing data integration frameworks are modeled on the premise of integrating heterogeneous data into a local repository. Issues like global data access, metadata management, data reusability and knowledge sharing remain vastly unexplored. These aspects become critical in medical environments where data is needed on an ongoing basis. There is an increasing need to search, retrieve and aggregate medical concepts from different medical vocabularies and share them with various sets of researchers. Based on this idea, we have designed an ‘Ontological Semantic Integration Model’ that makes use of innovative ideas like Ontologies, Web services and XML based data models to facilitate data integration. Our framework also allows users to perform metadata management, an aspect that is gaining prominence among data integration frameworks. As a proof of concept, we have deployed the system at Mid America Heart Institute where it is highly acclaimed by medical researchers.
