Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 1990.
Previous air-fuel management schemes for internal combustion engines are reviewed. Then, the basis behind Engine Air Control, where the operator input is fuel flow rate and the air flow rate is controlled, is presented. It is shown that Engine Air Control has distinct advantages over Engine Fuel Control in both transients and steady state. As established by the theory presented on engine operation, this system reduces to a simple servo on manifold pressure (EMPS). In this manner, the operator input controls fuel flow rate and a computer controlled throttle valve servos engine manifold pressure to achieve the Engine Air Control (EAC) effect. A nonlinear dynamic engine model is postulated and confirmed experimentally using a four cylinder motorcycle engine. The model is linearized and a proper control scheme is determined using classical linear techniques. The control scheme is then implemented on the non-linear model using digital simulation. The equations necessary for implementation of a digital controller are derived. The results show good correlation between theory and experiment. The system exhibits stable operation with desirable transient response.Subjects--Topical Terms:
