Theoretical and experimental research with the dielectric resonator antenna has been carried out by several investigators. In particular, it has been demonstrated experimentally that relatively strong radiation can be obtained from the hybrid HEM$\sb{11}$ mode. The normally directed radiation pattern of this mode has also been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Theoretical and experimental research with the dielectric resonator antenna has been carried out by several investigators. In particular, it has been demonstrated experimentally that relatively strong radiation can be obtained from the hybrid HEM$\sb{11}$ mode. The normally directed radiation pattern of this mode has also been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

In this research, a new configuration for the dielectric resonator antenna is presented, in which the antenna radiates through a slot in a ground plane. The rigorous analysis of an annular slot dielectric post cavity (or waveguide) antenna is performed in this work. An aperture magnetic current integral equation is used to model the slot and no actual excitation is used. The moment method is applied to the integral equation and the complex resonant frequency for the antenna structure is found by letting the determinant of the impedance matrix be zero. Subsequently, the radiation $\cal Q$-factor, near-field distribution, and radiation field are computed for the computed resonant frequency.

All admitted modes, including the TE, TM, and hybrid modes, can be investigated using this approach. Various TE, TM and HEM modes have been studied and it has been found, as expected, that the HEM$\sb{11}$ mode has a very low $\cal Q$-factor and normally directed radiation field for the annular dielectric resonator cavity antenna. Various cavity and annular slot geometrical configurations have been studied in this work.
