In this dissertation, the scan and frequency performance of infinite planar dipole phased arrays is analyzed with primary focus on the underlying physical causes of blind spot formation. The dipole and its "balun" feed structure are modelled in strip-line geometry and are a linearly polarized version of the General Electric "Perimeter Array Radar" (PAR) phased array antenna element. The antenna performance is determined via a Galerkin solution to a boundary value problem in a unit cell. The unit cell is subdivided into three regions: the feed ("balun") region, the free space region, and the dipole arm discontinuity between them. It is found that when the array is scanned, the "balun" structure supports unbalanced currents which radiate to the far field and may cause blind spots (total reflection) in the E-plan scan before the onset of the endfire grating lobe condition. The "balun" currents are expressed in terms of feed region modes and the major model contributors to the unbalanced currents which cause the blind spots are determined. Parametric studies reveal the dependence of blind spot angular location on array lattice and element geometry. A narrow angle (30(DEGREES)) design over (+OR-)5% frequency band is shown and recommendations are made for extending the scan coverage.
