Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 1999.
This dissertation presents a physics-based crankshaft torque observer for use with an internal combustion engine. The observer is based on a unique and efficient feedforward method for estimating instantaneous cylinder pressure in response to the control inputs applied by the operator or electronic engine controller. The observer further utilizes closed loop feedback of measured crankshaft motion states to force convergence of the crankshaft torque and motion state estimates to their actual values. In support of the development of the crankshaft torque observer, the dissertation also presents a real time, high fidelity, wide bandwidth internal combustion engine model.

The observer developed in this dissertation is applied to the problem of active control of crankshaft torque by means of a crankshaft-mounted electric machine. Specifically, a field oriented induction machine is used as a combined starter and alternator, with additional utility as a high frequency, independently controlled torque source suitable for active control of vibration.
