In a mobile computing environment, mobile clients communicate with stationary database servers through wireless channels with low bandwidth and low reliability. Contrary to conventional wired networks, a mobile client can frequently get disconnected from the wireless network for several reasons ranging from saving battery power, to saving on connection cost, to being physically out of range of any wireless cell. It is quite desirable that a mobile system should be capable of supporting users with required data in the disconnected period.

Because of low bandwidth and the high transmission cost of wireless networks, data items should be transferred between a mobile client and a stationary database server as little as possible. A mobile client can keep its frequently accessed database items in its local storage in order to reduce contention on the narrow bandwidth wireless channel and improve performance of database queries. A sophisticated caching mechanism can be employed to estimate a user's needs and retain only those items in the local cache that will either increase the availability of database items locally, or reduce data transmission, or improve both.

We study and analyze a mobile user behavior from various points of view. Based on our analysis of a mobile user behavior, we develop a data caching algorithm to cache data items in a user's computer. We then modify this algorithm to automatically hoard data items in a user's computer in order to support a user in a disconnected period. We also extend this algorithm to maintain the coherency of cached items. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm and compare it with some traditional ones. We find that our algorithm is an improvement over other algorithms.
