The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cholesterol on the surface properties of natural and lipid extract surfactant. Previous work was minimal, and results varied. Cholesterol is present in natural surfactant, but is not present in many therapeutic preparations.

Addition of cholesterol to surfactant preparations of BLES and Curosurf increased the adsorption rate at 15°C. The addition of 10% and 5% cholesterol had beneficial effects on BLES films at 15°C in terms of adsorption rates and film compressibility.

At 20°C, surfactant films of torpid dunnarts achieved lower minimum ST than surfactant from WA dunnarts. At 37°C, surfactant from 8-h torpid dunnarts was less surface active in terms of adsorption and minimum ST values than surfactant from WA animals at 37°C.
